Warm spiced apples on ice cream is the perfect Fall dessert! It is simple, yet elegant, and your family and guests will enjoy this unexpected pairing.
I prefer the tart Granny Smith but it would also be good with a mix of both tart and sweet.
You can make quick work of it by using an apple peeler. My personal choice, which I announce every time I make something apple, is the Victorio Apple Peeler.
There is nothing better than the fragrance of apples in sugary butter with spices wafting through your kitchen! Yeast bread rising is a close second, but I will vote for sugar browning any day.
The recipe is easy and quick! It starts with tart apple slices sauteed in butter. Brown sugar, spices and dried cranberries round out the flavors. You may add a bit of rum if you like but it is delicious without it as well.
Warm Spiced Apples on Ice Cream
4 large apples
5 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/3 + 2 tablespoons cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup dried cranberries
Vanilla ice cream
Wash the apples well then peel, core and slice. In a large fry pan, melt the butter then add the apple slices. Saute for 6 – 8 minutes until just tender. Stir in lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and the cranberries. Stir well and let heat through until the sauce bubbles just a little.
*For the adult-only crowd you will find a tablespoon or two of dark rum stirred in at the finish is very, very delicious!
Allow to cool a little. You want it a bit warm before you serve generous amounts over your ice cream. Chopped pecans would also be good on top!
