Tired of fighting the squirrels that are eating the seed you put out for your feathered friends? After trying several “squirrel-proof” feeders I tried a different approach – putting out a seed that the little critters just didn’t like!
Unlike birds, squirrels and other mammals do not like hot pepper. Birds, however, are unaffected. You can purchase birdseed that has been prepared with hot pepper or…. you can make your own! It’s very easy and economical.
You simply need to buy birdseed and cayenne pepper. To get the best buy on cayenne pepper visit a “dollar store” location. The formula is 3 tablespoons of pepper to every 1 pound of bird seed. For a 10 lb bag this is approximately 2 cups. When mixing such a large quantity being short a tablespoon or two won’t hurt so two jars (2.25 oz each) of the pepper is sufficient for a 10 lb bag.
I mixed this up in two 5 lb batches due to the size of the bowl. You could also use a 5 gallon bucket for large quantities.
Give it a try and happy bird-watching!
