Nothing says summer more than a bounty of fresh vegetables and fruits especially when you can walk out your door and harvest something right off a vine or tree or pull from the rich earth.
Fresh-picked is a wonderful thing.
If you are not lucky enough to have a garden you can still take advantage of home-grown with the local Farmer’s Markets. They seem to be every where these days.
Sharon just recently posted her visit to the fantastic Farmer’s Market at Wheeler Farm where you can find a huge variety of goodness to choose from as well as a chance to pet the baby lambs and listen to a great ol’ time marching band! How fun!
For me having this much fresh food also leads to experimenting with new and unique recipes which is exactly what I found on a recent visit to Melissa Placzek’s great website at Chin Deep.
I was intrigued by her Spicy Summer Garden Jam and just had to whip a batch for myself!
The ingredients are so vivid in color. Look at the variety of texture and veggies and spices that include tomatoes, corn, onion, peppers and jalapeno. Then come the spices – curry, cloves, cumin, cinnamon and ginger to name just a few. Sugar, vinegar and lemon come together to balance all of these flavors into a wonderfully sweet and savory (and perfectly spicy) condiment.
We served this beautiful vegetable jam with pork chops and roasted cabbage. Whether on the side or spooned onto a cracker or bread, this is a wonderful surprise for your summertime meal.
