Earlier this week Tammie shared some gift giving ideas from North Carolina. Well, today is my turn and I must say I had a lot of fun finding some unique items that are proudly produced in South Carolina. Here is my gift guide from the Palmetto State!
JEWELRY – something for the ladies…
Sea glass! Love it! Tammie and I both do and I have fond memories of us combing beaches together excitingly finding some piece that had its own special quality – size, shape or color! Well, Meg of Made by Meg Jewelry in Myrtle Beach clearly feels the same way. Her prices are reasonable and she also does custom orders including engagement rings!
CLOTHING – and something for the gents…
Now THIS is original and I love it. Bow ties – the fun for gentlemen accessory that is a must for a Southern man – made out of feathers. Ideal for the sportsman and a definite conversation starter! Check out Brackish.
FOOD – a can’t lose choice…
We love Gullah food in South Carolina. There is a whole line of seasonings, sauces, jellies and more offered by Gullah Gourmet to tempt the foodie on your list. Buy something for yourself too! After all, you’ve been good all year, right?
DRINKS – a beverage for the teetotaler!
A place that I have blogged about on Wadmalaw Island, The Charleston Tea Plantation, offers many affordable gifts for the tea drinkers in your life. Whether served warm during the chilly days ahead or brewed up for iced tea, the varieties offered are all very tasty and such a useful gift as well!
LIQUOR – and a spirited drink choice of course!
Also on Wadmalaw Island is the Firefly Distillery. Makers of specialty vodkas including (my favorite!) a sweet tea variety, this is a gift you won’t be able to order on-line. However, it is available around the U.S. and Canada. Or you can jet off to a few Caribbean locations to purchase it if so inclined!
KIDS – fun to shop for!
Now this was a bit of a challenge. I was surprised to find how few toy makers there are not just in South Carolina, but in the United States. I finally found Mary’s Country Craft Corner in nearby James Island. As well as toys they also make wooden banks. This is the kind of gift that becomes a keepsake and not just something destined for a yard sale a few years down the road. Made with skill and a reverence for the past I just loved the items at Mary’s!
PETS – they’re our kids too!
Nicole Engblom in Myrtle Beach is the creative force and owner of artzfolk. Although she makes many wonderful ceramic items the ones that struck me most were her gifts for pets. Check out her etsy store and find a perfect pet present.
SUBSCRIPTIONS – a one size fits all winner!
Published in Charleston, Garden and Gun covers not only gardening and sporting interests but the arts, home, food and more around the South. There is always lots of coverage of both of our Carolinas.
KNIVES – the not for children gift!
A knife from Middleton Made Knives by blade smith Quinton Middleton is a distinguished gift for a loved one. I encourage you to watch him at work in this video on his site. It was amazing to me how much work goes into a single blade! Whether you want to give a quality knife for the kitchen or a combination oyster shucker / bottle opener knife for use at an upcoming oyster roast the design and materials used are first class.
