I just finished watching this video – Dove’s Real Beauty Sketches. It was emotional and I actually got a little teary-eyed.
It was sad that the women in this video view themselves as so different from how others see them.
I’m no youngster any longer. I have imperfections – crow’s feet, some wrinkles and strands of gray peeking out of the brown hair. For the most part I feel confident in my appearance and accept these changes.
When I told my adult son that I was going to stop dyeing my hair and if the gray showed up then so be it! He said, “That’s so cool Mom.” Can you imagine how big I smiled that day? He’s right, that is so cool.
We lose confidence as we age because our value may be measured by how we look. A friend of mine, now in her late sixties, found that as she got older she was treated differently at a cosmetic counter or other retail setting – like she was invisible. I hate this.
We can only control so much. For me it’s about maintaining physical fitness and approaching life each day with the same zest I did 20 years ago. Not always that easy but I’ll die trying! Beauty comes from being enthusiastic, engaged in the world, learning new things and even acting silly when you feel like it. Smile wrinkles are so much better than the frown lines.
Our experiences and wisdom are valuable resources to our world! No matter what our age we should be enjoying the satisfaction that comes from knowing how important we are to the people in our lives and the difference we make.
So take a nice long look in the mirror and smile big. Now go ahead – skip, run and jump a little and howl at the moon (my personal favorite) as best you can.
Hugs and love to all you wonderful women!
