“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
― Jorge Luis Borges
Some of my favorite books are classics. I think these make the most wonderful holiday gifts.
Richard Llewellyn first published How Green Was My Valley in 1939. It is a beautiful work. The novel is set in South Wales and tells the story of the Morgans, a respectable mining family of the South Wales Valleys, through the eyes of the youngest son, Huw Morgan. Huw is the most endearing character!
This novel is so near and dear to my heart that I have memorized the first paragraph in Chapter One…. “I am going to pack my two shirts with my other socks and my best suit in the little blue cloth my mother used to tie round her hair when she did the house, and I am going from this Valley.”
I have read hundreds of books so it’s hard to pick those I love the most but I thought I’d share a few here if you are looking for some gift ideas.
Of course, Willa Cather is an American treasure. It’s hard to believe she was born in 1873 as her stories are relevant even today. Some of Cather’s novels that I think are worth every minute you spend engrossed in them include:
The Professor’s House, Sapphira and the Slave Girl and My Antonia to name just a few. You can find many of her books on Amazon and see the reviews as well – Books of Willa Cather.
Taking an opposite turn away from classics I am also a lover of sci-fi and fantasy! You cannot go wrong with Veronica Roth’s works for young adults and adults ad well! You can get the Divergent Series Complete Box Set for a great price right now!
If you love epic fantasy and want to be engrossed in a world unlike any other then George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones 5-Book Boxed Set (Song of Ice and Fire series) is a must read! So, so good!
Let us not forget the cooks in your life! Cookbooks are usually welcomed by the people we hang out with. One of the best is The Cook’s Illustrated Cookbook: 2,000 Recipes from 20 Years of America’s Most Trusted Cooking Magazine! Give this and you will be on someone’s good list.
There are also numerous and wonderful books for children. Some greats come to mind like Richard Scarry’s Best Christmas Book Ever! or The Polar Express. I adore the endearing The Elf on the Shelf A Christmas Tradition with Blue Eyed North Pole!
It’s true some adults have taken to using the Elf in circumstances that were never anticipated by the author (but admit it, there are some posts that are funny!). But this is and always will be a children’s book!
Books will never go out of gifting-style. So join in the fun and pass along your favorite new or old book. Reading really is our window to the world.
