Every time I notice the scale creeping up or my pants getting a bit snug, I start keeping a food journal. If you are like me, by the time dinner rolls around we have forgotten about the cookie we had at 11 am, the spoonful of Mac and cheese from our kid’s lunch, and the soda we drank at 2 pm, and indulge in dinner and dessert.
All of these calories add up and add to our hips, bottoms or bellies! By keeping track of what you have eaten you can better control your caloric intake.
If you are trying to lose weight, if you are trying to eat a more balanced diet, or if you are training for a race, a food journal is a perfect jumping off point.
Food journals allow us to see gaps in our nutrition as well as areas we need to cut back, and may even show you that you can indulge every so often. If you don’t know where you are it is difficult to get where you want to be.
When a friend of mine started her food journal she said her motto was, “If I bite it, I write it!”
I would add ‘drink it’ too, but that isn’t nearly as catchy! I track my nutrition via mapmyrun.com There I am able to log foods I have eaten and track calories burned from exercise. The website keeps track of my ‘calorie budget’ making it easy for me to see where I am throughout the day.
What is your favorite way to keep a food journal, online or on paper?
