Pillow case dress for Project Yesu

It’s amazing the friends we have made through blogging. The creativity, commitment and love displayed by so many in this vast community of (mostly) women renews our faith in people.

A couple of weeks ago we met Kristen of A Thrifter in Disguise. She came to our Brag About It Party with a link to her inspirational and moving blog post PILLOWCASE DRESSES FOR LITTLE GIRLS IN UGANDA. What a great cause!

Through Kristen we learned about Project Yesu, an organization started by a remarkable young woman named Mallory.  She is making a trip to Uganda this summer and her goal is to get as many handmade pillowcase dresses as possible to take to the little girls!

These dresses can be made from actual pillowcases but they are just as easily made with a yard of fabric.  It was fun to choose the bright prints and ribbons to create these darling little dresses.   Most of all  it’s exciting to know that a little girl may smile when she sees one of our dresses and happily wear it!

Sharon and our sister Shawna and Denise and her daughter Aubrie all worked on the dresses.  Look how cute they are!

Pillowcase Dresses

While the deadline is swiftly approaching for this project of Mallory’s there certainly must be young girls in all of our cities in all of our countries that could benefit from a new summer dress. Perhaps at the women’s shelter or other non-profit.

If you want to give it a try the best simple tutorial is at Sew Like My Mom.

  1. These dresses are adorable — and I can think of a small person in my life who would enjoy one of these. Lately, with my schedule, I seek simple projects that I will actually get done.

Thank you for passing this on, and Mallory’s story is inspiring as well.

  2. Denise says:

Thanks Carolyn! Thanks for your comment. The great thing about this project is that you can get it done fast! And they are so cute. If you have a serger you can whip right through them.

Thanks for the picture as well! We love all pictures. All the best!

We had a pastor a few years ago who went to Uganda. So, when I saw this on the My Turn party I had to click! 🙂 Such a sweet idea. I’ve been wanting to make a pillowcase dress for a long time for my 2 girls. This will be my motivation to learn how. Then, we can make an extra one too. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    • Denise says:

Thank you Gina! So happy you found this inspirational and now you can make some too! Hope to see you soon.

  7. Linda says:

I just found out that it’s too late to help by making dresses. My sister and I sew and would have loved to have made some of these little dresses. I’m featuring your link this week on What to do Weekends #22.

    Take care, Linda

    • Denise says:

Hi Linda. Yes this has ended but I think there are many local opportunities! There certainly are Safe shelters for women and children and temporary housing as well… there would be grateful girls there too. Or maybe arrange something with your local Salvation Army or other non-profit. THANKS a bunch for the Feature!

  8. Jenna says:
