Sewing Table Ready to Go

You too can create your custom sewing table to fit the size and shape for your space.

Especially if you have a man in our life like my wonderful husband! He came up with the idea and we made it together.

Actually, he did a most of the work and I was the attractive assistant.

Perhaps I exaggerate on the attractive part… it was a weekend morning of coffee, slouchy pants, an old Henley and no makeup.

The Old Sewing Table mess

Looking at the picture above you can see why I needed an organized and larger space.

I have been sewing on the Costco table for years until it started bowing in the middle and shaking like crazy when I put the pedal to the floor.  It was always a mess!

Ikea drawers in gray

The project started with two Ikea Alex Drawer Units in gray.  They come in several colors but the gray looked amazing and modern.  They are sitting in our dusty garage, as you can see.  I cannot explain those weird dust circles but just ignore that :0.

Cutting the solid core door for the table top

The top is made from a solid core interior door in stock at our Home Depot and is 30″wide, 1 3/8″ thick and 80″ tall.  They come in different widths, depending on how deep you want your table top.

The door is cut to 6′ long to fit into my space.

The sheet of laminate was ordered through Home Depot.  You can choose from many styles and colors.

Stripping paint from door edges

In order for the laminate to to stay secure on the front, sides and back edges (not a worry for the top), we sanded off the primer paint.

Me taking photo of door and feet and sawdust

Here I am getting a make-a-table and take-a-weird-and-useless-top-of-table-edge-to-feet  shot. Which makes my feet look elf-sized and the table look giant.

But check out my fab handmade shoes from SoleRebel!  Love these.  But I digress.

Scoring and cutting laminate for desk top

The laminate comes rolled up, so the day prior to the start of the project,  we laid the it out in the house and put boards on either end to flatten a bit.

When ready, we scored then cut a piece several inches longer than the door, this will become the table top. Then we head to the driveway and the saw.

Saw set up to cut

The saw blade is surrounded by cardboard and taped down on either side.  This helps reduce the chance of chipping on the edge of the laminate.

My husband fed the laminate from the front guiding it through the blade.  I stood on the back side with one hand on each piece as they came through, allowing them to curl up a bit as I walked backwards.  This kept the the laminate flat to the surface of the saw.

The top was cut at least 1″ larger than the door on all sides.  Next, we cut two strips of laminate for the ends of the door and two strips for the front and back sides, these are all 2″ wide allowing a little extra width.  The extra length and width of the cuts allows easy positioning on the surfaces as you don’t have to line up the edges.  They will be filed flush once the adhesive is set.

Unfortunately,  I cannot show you pictures of the laminating process because it took two of us to complete it.  It involves adhesive with a roller to apply it to all of the door surfaces that will be covered.  The laminate pieces get a coat of adhesive as well.

Here is a great how to video!

After the table is ready, we position the drawers in the room and set the top on.  My husband secured the drawers to the top with L brackets, two toward the front of the table and two toward the back.  This keeps everything securely in place.

You can hide most of the cords behind the drawers!!  I know! Too awesome.

Of course, I need my TV and computer to watch Project Runway reruns while working.

The New Sewing Table!

Now I can get back to sewing the things I love! Check out some of my sewing posts!
