Tell us about yourself.

My name is Amber and I’m the owner of SweetAmbs, LLC. I recently returned to my hometown of Kingston, New York to open my business after a couple of years living in Chicago. Kingston is located about 90 miles north of New York City in the beautiful Hudson River Valley. I come from a family of artists and entrepreneurs, so I’m happy to be able to follow in their footsteps by owning a business where I can combine my love of baking with my artistic abilities.

When did you discover your creative talents?

I’ve always known since I was little that I had artistic talents, which were cultivated with the help of my mother and grandmothers, but it wasn’t until after I graduated from college that I applied those talents to pastry. It was then that I decided to study baking and pastry arts at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

How did you come up with this idea?

I started decorating cookies one day in April of 2009. This was the first time I tried the different decorating techniques that I had learned at school on cookies instead of cakes. After I made my first batch, my mom suggested I start selling them on Etsy. Cookies are easy to ship, so they are the perfect way for me to share my creative talents with people all over the world.

Tell us your creative process.

I begin with an inspiration, such as an antique tea cup or even just a color palette. Then, I sit down with a sketch book and draw a few different cookie designs. I usually draw 6 cookies for one set, which is how I sell them in my Etsy shop. For custom orders, I ask the client for some materials such as artwork from an invitation or some color swatches so I can design something that will go with their theme.

Describe yourself in 5 words.

Introverted, meticulous, obsessive, creative, cautious.

What are your dreams for your business?

My dream for my business is that it grows and evolves and allows me to keep doing what I love.

Is there anything you’d like our readers to know?
